Protein (Pudding) Review: SPECIES Protolyze Pudding Review

Protein Pudding? What In The…

PROTEIN… and PUDDING? YES!

When I first received my sample packs of Species PROTOLYZE I wasn’t quite sure what I had received. I had reviewed Isolyze RTD (Ready To Drink) awhile ago and I enjoyed it so I had high hopes for Protolyze… but I wasn’t quite sure how the product was different. That’s when I looked at the package and noticed it said PROTEIN PUDDING. What!? Pudding??? You’ve gotta be kidding me! The only time I’d ever had a “protein pudding” was when I added some to those Jello pudding cups. This was something completely different. A whole serving that was in powdered form that you’d mixed up with water (or milk) and it would slowly form itself into a nice, creamy pudding. I remembered having some issues with the RTDs because I couldn’t quite get all of the protein to shake up in the bottle when I was mixing them so I was interested to see how well Protolyze pudding would actually mix up and whip itself into pudding instead of a chunky mess. I got a tip to put the pudding in the fridge overnight so thats exactly what I did.

MIX IT UP & LEAVE IT ALONE!

246388923

My sample packs were one serving for the pudding (30g protein/serving), but I had 2 packs of both chocolate and vanilla. The directions say to mix 1 scoop with 2 ounces of water. I used both sample packs at once so I could enjoy a 60g serving of protein split up throughout the next day. I mixed both packs with 4 ounces of milk and started to stir them into a big bowl just a spoon. After awhile (~1 minute or so) the mixture had changed from a milky powdery mess to a more thick consistency that was starting to resemble something pudding-like. After about another minute of stirring I had finally whipped the mixture up enough that it legitimately looked like JELLO pudding. Nice, thick and creamy. The biggest problem you’ll run into is that most of the protein powder as you are mixing will try and force itself to the outer rim of the bowl. Once it was all mixed up I stuck it in the fridge overnight and when I opened it up the next morning it looked like I poured brownie batter into a bowl and left it there in the fridge.

TASTE TEST!

Protolyze-1500

Leaving it overnight in the fridge only added to the thickness. Sticking a spoon into it was like diving into a chilled creme brulee. The taste was nothing short of fantastic and is what I came to expect after the results with Isolyze. Protolyze is a little different, consisting of a combination of micellar casein protein and whey isolate. The flavor was amazing, right up there with actually eating Jello chocolate pudding! I only meant to eat half the bowl and save the rest for after lunch but I couldn’t resist. Licked the bowl and spoon clean! Great taste, fantastic profile and a unique spin on how to get in your protein for the day. Taking shake after shake can get quite monotonous and if you have the patience to mix up some Protolyze pudding and set it aside for a treat for later in the fridge then you will be pleasantly surprised when you dive into it post workout/midnight snack/anytime. The only downside I can see to this would be those people that just don’t have the time to sit there and mix up the protein and wait to eat it. I’m sure there will be a post somewhere about someone adding the pudding mix into their shaker and wondering why it was so damn thick! I for one enjoyed it and will be looking to get more for the future (and for those of you still reading, yes, vanilla was just as good!)

Protein Review: SAN’s RAWFUSION

SAN’S RAWFUSION PROTEIN

RawFusion-PCF-2lb

THE FACTS

So I received 2 sample pack trial sizes of SAN’s RAWFUSION to give a review on. I have seen this protein before and I’ve actually had a sample pack given to me when I visited the Arnold Classic a few years ago but it disappeared within my bag of goodies from that year and by the time I had found it it wasn’t really edible anymore. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had another opportunity to try it out! Now judging from just looking at the product labeling by itself we can already see that it is going to fit into a lot of food niches for people with particular dietary issues, dietary beliefs or allergies, etc. Completely bases itself off of plant proteins (which I must say is a first for me to try!). Gluten free. No dairy whatsoever. Non-GMO for those of you out there like to watch where your food comes from. Non-animal, hypo-allergenic (sometimes you never know whats in that protein blend you got from the smoothie bar at the gym), with great taste and easy digestion. All of that is fine and dandy but what I’m really concerned with when I review and taste test protein is a few things: how good is the taste really going to be, how does the macro profile breakdown look, how easy is it to mix up, and how much is it going to cost me. I’m usually looking for the highest amount of protein per serving for the least cost per serving without sacrificing the quality of the product.

Nutrition-Facts-Peanut-Chocolate-RawFusion

So in one scoop we’ll get 21g of protein, 5g of carbs and practically no fat. That’s fine with me (but for those of you going low-to-no carb you might need to find another outlet such as Dymatize ISO-100). Amino acid profile looks great. I’d say a serving of 21g of protein per scoop is right near the average for other products I’ve tried (usual range is 15g-30g/serving). What I am initially concerned with is that although the label shows a checkmark for lower price, who knows how well that translates compared to other proteins. However after doing some research it looks like Rawfusion hovers around the 0.80cents/serving mark which is VERY good. Granted you can find other higher protein per serving products out there at a lower cost per serving, they don’t boast the added benefits that Rawfusion has slapped onto it’s label. The numbers look fine but how do they taste? And how does it mix?

MIX IT UP

MIX METHOD #1: Cup & Spoon – I would literally never recommend this method to anyone trying to get their protein fix. Yea it might be the fastest way to get it down but Rawfusion (like practially any other protein) didn’t fare well with mixing by a spoon. Left some huge chunks floating around and even after continued stirring did it finally break them down into smaller, swallowable size. Avoid!

MIX METHOD #2: Shaker (preferred) – Throw in one scoop of Rawfusion into about 10-12oz of water (or milk or whatever you prefer), close the lid and shake away. After about 15 seconds of vigorous shaking the protein shake was ready for consumption.

MIX METHOD ##: Blender – For those that lack a shaker cup or just really want to watch their protein spin around and turn into a completely homogeneous mixture then this method is for you.

TASTE TEST

After mixing up Rawfusion in my shaker cup, I took one sip for just to let it linger on the tongue (I usually just chug my shakes with reckless abandon). My samples were chocolate, and while the chocolate taste was there and was good, it was very short lived. Since Rawfusion is completely based off of plant protein, regardless of whatever flavor enhancers SAN added, they plant based flavor still breaks through and is definitely not a pleasant experience. It’s certainly not the worst product I’ve ever tried, but if you are looking for something that tastes great and has a good profile I’d say look elsewhere (Trutein, Ultimate Flurry, Gold Standard). Right after the choclatey taste wore off you get an aftertaste that is almost chemical in nature and very bland/chalky. I quickly tried drinking the rest of the shake in order to free myself from the planty sensation that I was now feeling even in my nostrils but it kept resurfacing. The aftertaste goes away after 30 seconds of so but I found myself scrambling to get some bottled water to rinse my mouth out with and wash everything down. The texture was very thick and foamy almost like trying to drink a half melted milkshake that had sat in a car in the sun for too long. Not too thin, not too thick but somewhat foamy. Not chunks or grittiness to it. While it wasn’t the best tasting thing in the world it was definitely drinkable. I did not notice myself having any stomach discomfort or burps afterwards. Very easy on the innards.

FINAL WORD

san-raw-fusion-banner-2

If your regular protein is giving you troubles or you suffer from some sort of dietary intolerance, I would definitely give SAN’s Rawfusion a chance. It’s cheap for the serving (and gets even cheaper per serving the bigger the tub you buy), its easy on the stomach, and if you can get past the aftertaste then you’ll have no issues drinking it down (may even taste better when mixed with milk)! The amino acid profile and the macro profile are well balanced. I would always like to see a little higher protein per serving content from my protein product, but from the other benefits of Rawfusion based on its profile I can’t complain! Considering it wasn’t made from any animal-based source, I’m impressed!

DIET/SUPPS

Last nights carb-loading meal after going <30g carbs the past two days:

– 1 large plate of spaghetti with meat sauce
– 2 cherry Pop Tarts
– 1 vanilla frosted cupcake (grocery store brand)
– 1 bowl of chili w/ fiesta cheese and oyster crackers
– 1 Powercrunch bar
– 1 Ocean Spray fruit snacks package
– 1 bowl of Frosted Flakes

Even after consuming all of those delicious carbs I was still hungry but I had had enough and knew I probably needed to stop or I was going to eat the whole pantry. Going without carbs for nearly two days will do that to ya! Of course I took my AAv2, Recompadrol and Metabolic Powder beforehand. Then it was ON for today’s workout… and let me tell you… when you reintroduce carbs into your system and then go hit up a high volume workout like the one I did today you need to be prepared for the SKIN BURSTING pumps that will follow! During lat pulldowns I thought my lats were going to explode. My compression shirt immediately became too tight to move in and I had a hard time even getting all my reps in not because I was lacking the strength but because the pumps were almost getting to the point of being debilitating. Today was a great day all around. I want to focus on some heavy chest/tricep movements to help me further advance my benchpress while backing off on the weights and keeping the reps high on nearly everything else. Today was a great success… and curling 90? Thats never happened before and IT FELT EASY. So there was definitely no loss of strength from cutting the carbs.

The RECOMPADROL is about out but have no fear because I have some more on the way! I should be able to get another 2 weeks or so out of AAv2 and MP so look forward to a product overview soon and eventually the final review will follow. I’ll keep tracking this log as long as I have the products to do it!
